New offering for intermodal transport between Austria and Switzerland

SBB Cargo and die Rail Cargo Group to launch scheduled intermodal services on the corridor between Wels and Dietikon close to Zurich in January 2014

SBB Cargo and the Rail Cargo Group deepen their cooperation by joining their national networks for intermodal transport in Austria and Switzerland, respectively, via St. Margarethen. They signed a cooperation agreement on November 14 in Vienna. This is the first transborder cooperation in intermodal transport of the two cargo railways. As to traditional wagon load transport they have been cooperating for years in the frame of the Xrail Alliance.

From mid-January 2014 the two railway enterprises will offer their customers scheduled services from Monday to Friday on the east-west corridor between Wels, Upper Austria, and Dietikon close to Zurich. If demand grows, the offer can be extended to Vienna and Genf or Basel, respectively.

“Today we offer intermodal transport services to Gossau in the canton of St. Gallen. Through this new, joint offer we provide our customers with an attractive extension on the east-west corridor“, says Daniel Bürgy, head of sales, SBB Cargo.

“The new intermodal service between Switzerland and Austria is an important step for domestic traffic on the railway. Rail Cargo Group has been counting on partnerships in Europa for years, to push the shift of cargo transport from road to environmentally friendly rail in a sustainable and bordercrossing manner“, says Erik Regter, CEO Rail Cargo Group.

Rail Cargo Group offers customers a daily national intermodal train with departure in the evening and arrival in the morning, connecting the terminals Wolfurt, Bludenz, Wels, Hall and Vienna Freudenau. This new cooperation and the connection to the National Intermodal Network Austria (NINA) results in a high-quality link between Austria and Switzerland, strengthening the national intermodal traffic in both countries. Erik Regter: “Reliable transit times and a customer-oriented offering encourages further shift from road to railway, national as well as beyond the borders. The objective is to create stable longterm connections that are attractive for our customers, and to implement market requirements in Europe the best way possible.“
