Newly acquired Pöhland stimulates Contargo’s Eastern Europe business

Container operator Contargo reinforces its commitment in intermodal traffic between Germany’s seaports and Eastern Europe

The acquisition of Pöhland group by Contargo GmbH & Co. KG (Duisburg), which had been announced in November 2011, is completed. Through this acquisition the buyer strengthens the hinterland connections in South and East Germany. "Our goal is to expand the intermodal traffic between Germany and the neighbouring regions in Poland and the Czech Republic," said Thomas Loeffler, CEO of Contargo. The forwarder Pöhland based in the Bavarian Döhlau as a neutral operator in the container sector transports annually about 100,000 TEU by rail and truck from the northern German seaports to Bavaria, Saxony, Thuringia and Eastern Europe. The forwarding company founded in 1936 has offices in Döhlau, Glauchau, Hamburg, Hof, Luhe-Wildenau and Sonnenberg.

Moreover container terminals in Sonneberg (Thuringia), the Frankish hof and in Glauchau in southwest Saxony are included in the portfolio. 40,000 m² of warehouse space are available for storage logistic services. The annual turnover of the company with 170 employees is around EUR 40 million.

Contargo, with an annual transport capacity of 1.6 million TEU, counts among the big container logistics networks in Europe. The company integrates the container traffic between the western ports, the German North Sea ports and the European hinterland. It is based on 24 container terminals in inland ports in Germany, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. Including the four own ship services and two railway lines, the turnover generated by the 800 employees in 2001 reached a value of EUR 380 million.
