NordCargo: Majortiy for DB Schenker Rail

NordCargo and DB Schenker Rail form the second-largest cargo railway company in Italy

In Italy there is a new provider of rail cargo transports. DB Schenker Rail has increased their shares of the Italian cargo railway company NordCargo s.r.l. by 11 per cent. In January 2009 the DB subsidiary had already acquired 49 per cent of the shares of NordCargo and is now holding the majority – 60 per cent of the company based in Milano.

Today’s business of DB Schenker Rail Italia, based in Alessandria, is to be introduced into NordCargo, thus the activities of both companies are merged under the name NordCargo. The integration of the activities of DB Schenker Rail Italia and NordCargo creates an enterprise with around 300 employees. “By merging the two companies we are able to improve the offer in Italy and on the north-south axis, and thus create the basis for more growth on the railway in the international, as well as in the Italian market", says Alexander Hedderich, CEO DB Schenker Rail.

NordCargo, headquartered in Milano, was seperated from the parent group Ferrovie Nord Milano (FNM) at the end of 2003. Around 200 employees generated a turnover of about EUR 40 million with international and national transportations in 2008. The enterprise has a licence for the Italian network, operates 7,000 trains per year and is in charge of the traction on international routes along the Adriatic and tirrenic coasts between Milan and Naples. NordCargo has been operating in the cargo transport market since September 2001.

Italy is one of the most important markets abroad for DB Schenker Rail. Around one fourth of the international turnover 2008 was generated with transportations from and to Italy. The enterprise has been cooperating with NordCargo in Italy for some years.
