ÖBB’s CEO Christian Kern urges for improved logistics flows

Rail Cargo Austria puts focus on East European market – ÖBB’s CEO Christian Kern still sees many bottlenecks

„The market of Eastern Europe has great potential for Rail Cargo Austria. However, a more intensive, pan-European cooperation is the basis for success. To increase the quality of the infrastructure we need a coordinated infrastructure plan and to harmonise the different European standards“, says Christian Kern, Chairman of the Management ÖBB-Holding AG, at the exchange of ideas of the High Level Group Logistics of the European Commission in Brussels.

The ÖBB head sees the most important growth rates in Southeast Europe’s market. “This is also where the most bottlenecks are, there is a great demand for action“, says Christian Kern. As a barrier he considered also the insufficient opening of the market, obstructing regional or global transport and logistics services. It was necessary to expand transport and shipping capacities at the Adriatic and the Black Sea.

Siim Kallas, Vie President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Transport, invited fifteen top enterprises from the European transport and logistics industry to Brussels to exchange ideas about logistics in Europe. Christian Kern, Chairman of the Management Board ÖBB-Holding AG, represented the Austrian railway sector in this high-level discussion. The aim of this first CEO platform was to define „barriers to growth in the logistic sector“ and gain synergies and new ideas for better goods flow in Europe.
