PD Ports reaches major milestone at Teesport

PD Ports reached another major milestone at Teesport – handling 150,000 containers through its terminals within a calendar year.

Frans Calje, PD Ports managing director of Unitised, pointed out that reaching this record throughput after a steady throughput of around 80,000 containers just two and a half years ago is testimony to the success of PD Ports‘ portcentric logistics strategy.

Following the previous throughput milestone of more than 100,000 containers in 2009, this latest achievement means that Teesport’s container terminals‘ year-on-year growth is more than 45%.

Calje believes these results will continue to climb in 2011 as Teesport continues with its container handling expansion plans, positioning the port as one of the UK’s major container hubs.

This year, work will begin on the first phase of these expansion plans, which will potentially involve a total investment of around £29 million.

This first phase, at a cost of more than £15 million, will expand Teesport’s container terminal capacity from the current 235,000 TEU to 450,000 TEU.

Subsequent phases will be investigated subject to volume growth and market stability. The port’s overall strategy is to expand port-wide capacity, including Ro-Ro traffic, to at least 650,000 TEU.
