Pilot project on the rails with the DPD Austria parcel service

DPD Austria tests rail transport of parcels and sees open questions regarding the cost-effectiveness

Under the title "DPD on track" Austria’s leading private parcel service DPD Austria operates currently a pilot project in terms of climate protection. In order to reduce CO2 emissions, the company is testing the rail transport of parcels as a substitute for the classic liner transport by truck. On the railway line from Wels to Bludenz 1,200 parcels are transported per day.

"Each truck kilometre saved is a contribution to environmental protection. With the shift from road to rail, we can utilise the existing resources. So now we have started Rail Cargo, a test project in which parcels are transported by rail”, explains Rainer Schwarz, CEO of DPD Austria.

DPD wants to improve CO2 its balance through implementing sustainable measures and induce a rethinking of transportation concepts. "The pilot project was implemented now, because the terminal opening times at the marshalling yards are compatible with our system now. These were extended in the railway station Wels and thus made useable for DPD”, the company wrote in a press release.

The only downer of DPD Austria’s rail initiative is the associated financial burden. "For the future the cost factor and thus the economy has to be further clarified. In terms of sustainability, we would like to continue and even expand the pilot project”, says Rainer Schwarz.
