Port of Antwerp posts significantly higher cargo throughput volumes

Growing world trade stimulates container traffic at the Belgian seaport of Antwerp

The Belgian seaport of Antwerp is connecting to its pre-crisis success in cargo throughput. In the period from January to June around 87 million tons were handled at the quay facilities. This is a 12.7 per cent increase on last year.

Antwerp registered a clear growth trend in container traffic. These volumes rose almost 20 per cent to 51.3 million tons, as the Antwerp Port Authority announces in a press release. In total the port manipulated 4.2 million TEU (up 16.2 per cent) in the reporting period.

Automotive business showed an even better development with an increase of 29.3 per cent to 442,267 vehicles. As for ro-ro traffic a total throughput of 1.8 million tons meant a 13.4 per cent rise on the first half year 2009.
