Port of Duisburg: Inauguration of the Volkswagen logistics property

Constructed by Goodman and operated by syncreon: New logistics centre in the port of Duisburg to supply the Volkswagen plants outside Europe

The port of Duisburg now hosts a new logistics centre for Volkswagen. On 20 March 2014 property group Goodman and logistics service provider syncreon celebrated the opening of the new export hub with an area of approximately 24,000 m² in the port of Duisburg. The event was celebrated with representatives from Duisburger Hafen AG (duisport) and Volkswagen along with Mayor Sören Link.

The logistics centre is leased to Volkswagen, with syncreon to use the property for logistics supply to the automotive group’s plants outside Europe. Actual operations will commence on 1 April.

In addition to providing the site, Duisburger Hafen AG is also undertaking the entire transport logistics for Volkswagen. This specifically includes the transport of containers to the sea ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, which is done in an environmentally friendly manner, in combined transport through the Duisburg terminals.

The inaugurated warehouse is tailored specifically to the requirements of the automotive industry. The 24,000 m² of storage and logistics space include the industry-typical side loading and unloading zones in a tunnel structure of approximately 3,000 m² and an external storage-space of approximately 1,000 m², which serves as a loading bay.

Volkswagen has commissioned international service provider syncreon for processing the inhouse logistics at the Duisburg-Kasslerfeld site. The company will manage the property and employ more than 200 staff.

In the search for a well-connected logistics location, allowing international shipping of automotive parts, Volkswagen chose the port of Duisburg. The logistics concept designed by duisport and the good infrastructure with many direct connections provided by rail and inland waterway to the sea ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp, are complemented by a tailor-made logistics property.
