Port of Venice opens new terminal for ferry traffic

EUR 250 million total investment: New terminal shall provide new sea freight oppurtunities to Austrian and German enterprises

The port of Venice enhances its offering for ferry transport and ro-ro shipping. In May a new terminal will start operation in Marghera, on the mainland of Venice, which shall become a hub for the “sea-motorway” in the Adriatic region. The construction of the facility was built with EUR 250 million; private companies accounted for 80 per cent thereof.

The new terminal with quay length of 1,250 metres, including all logistics and trade services, covers an area of 36 hectares. Up to 2,000 vessels per year can call there. The new building is a response of the port authority to increasing vessel traffic with the southern Mediterranean region and Asia.

„We want to use the closeness of Venice to Austria and Germany, as well as to the Balkans, to score in competition with the major ports in the north. Our target is to increase the competitiveness of our services for Austrian companies that want to use our port for handling their businesses“, says Paolo Costa, president of the Venice port authority.
