Port of Linz: Test operation of the new container crane is coming closer

New container crane in the port of Linz to start test operation this autumn; the crane is a core piece of the expansion of the container terminal

The expansion of the port of Linz is progressing fast. Following the completion of the silting of three harbour basins, the works to expand the container terminal is at full speed.

Therefore a new container crane is being set up among other things, which will allow loading, unloading and reloading two vessels berthed side by side. The crane with a reach of 88 metres and maximum lifting capacity of 41 tonnes shall presumably start operation by the end of September, informs the port of Linz in a press release.

The expansion of the container terminal, which is also promoted by the European Union, totalling EUR 20.1 million, is the biggest individual investment in the history of the port of Linz. A core piece of this unique project is the new container crane, to arm the port of Linz for future challenges.

Facts and figures about the new container crane:The reach of the crane is 40.65 meters; 23.70 meters of projection on either side – the total width is thus approximately 88 meters.

The cabin, which is the work place of the crane operator, is located at a height of approximately 20 meters.

The crane will be used in the first place to load containers of up to 41 tonnes of total weight to trucks, waggons and ships.

The height of the crane allows the stacking of five high cube containers one above the other (14.50 meters) and crossing stored containers with a sixth container.

The projection allows both the large-scale operation of the silted area as well as loading or unloading of two adjacent vessels.

The span of the crane allows placing containers in 23 rows as well as loading and unloading two truck lanes, and currently two railway tracks. In a next stage, two additional rail tracks are to be built in this area.

The runway is 500 meters long in the first construction phase, and will be extended subsequently by about 100 meters (the train runs on the original terminal site, the existing crane was „moved“ to the silted areas).

According to their own account the port of Linz offers „a geographically central and internationally significant logistics centre, providing all advantages of professional cargo handling: container terminal, commercial and tank port with all required transhipment faculties, warehouses and general cargo halls, special warehouse for deep freeze products and dangerous cargo as well as towing services. Total operational performance amounted to 2.91 million tonnes in the2013 financial year.
