Port of Vienna continues expansion of its container terminal

Port of Vienna to receive up to EUR 5.3 million funds from the European Union to continue land reclamation and expansion of the container terminal

The port of Vienna, a company of Wien Holding, will be continuously expanded throughout the coming years. By the end of 2013 the European Union has decided to provide funds of EUR 5.3 million in total for the expansion of the port.

„The further expansion of the port focuses on two projects: the land reclamation in the port of Freudenau and the continued expansion of the container terminal. The total investment amounts to at least EUR 8.5 million,“ says Karin Zipperer, managing director of the port of Vienna.

Equipped with three bridge cranes the container terminal with a current maximum capacity of around 600,000 TEU will be further enlarged to an area immediately adjacent to the existing facilities and located right on the waterfront as a response to the strong upward trend. This allows to substantially reduce distances at the terminal. The containers can be handled faster and new depot areas are created. Depending on the economic climate, up to 30 per cent more containers can be handled after the terminal expansion is completed.

The land reclamation project – from planning services to bulk cargo action and the construction of berths – will be implemented in coordination with and under control of the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T) and is expected to be completed by 2015/2016. By reducing the size of the harbour basin by about 20 per cent, more space will be created for new cargo handling and storage facilities, to upgrade the port of Vienna for future increases in freight volume. The first stage has been completed. More than 30,000 m² of land has been reclaimed from the water already. The second stage starts before the end of 2014. The total potential surface of the project is 70,000 m².

„With the continued expansion of the port we meet the growing significance of the port of Vienna as one of the most important hubs for international traffic in Austria. Here, the site serves as a strong and efficient hub for transhipment of goods between rail, road and the Danube river. With the new expansion projects we are strengthening the port of Vienna so it can fulfill this role perfectly,“ says Fritz Lehr, managing director of the port of Vienna.
