Private cargo railways in Austria win market shares

Rail freight services in Austria have been picking up pace in the second half year 2013 and were significantly higher than the 2009 figure.

In the second half year 2013 the Austrian rail freight services showed clear signs of improvement. The total traffic volume increased by five per cent compared to last year’s figures. This is shown in the current assessment by Schienen-Control. The private railway companies were able to increase their market shares and also the number of private railway companies has increased.

In total about 111 million tons of goods were transported by rail in Austria in 2013. Compared to 2012 this means a slight decrease which is due to the economic development. From a long-term perspective the 2013 level with an increase of more than 4,5 million tons (+ 4 %) was significantly higher than the 2009 figures.

The private railway companies were able to improve their performance again. Two new providers started operation in 2013. This means that there are presently 28 private cargo operators active in the ÖBB network. With regard to transport volumes, the market share of the private railway companies increased from 23 per cent (2012) to 25 per cent (in tonnes). Total freight traffic volumes by the private railway companies – in net tonne kilometres – increase by 1,7 per cent to 19,3 per cent from 2012 to 2013.
