RCA achieved market leadership in Central and Southeastern Europe in 2009

Rail Cargo Austria AG posts decline in turnover and clearly negative operating result for the financial year 2009

Rail Cargo Austria Group was able to further expand its market position in the year 2009. According to their own account they reached the position of the market leader in Central and Southeastern Europe. “The further consolidation of our market position was mainly supported by the acquisition of the Hungarian MÁV Cargo (since 1 March 2010 Rail Cargo Hungaria) in 2008. The takeover created valuable synergies and there is even more growth potential in terms of international cargo transport for us“, the Management Board writes in their annual report hot-off-the-press.

In total RCA Group carried 120 million tons in the reporting period, which is 18 per cent below the 2008-level. Excluding Rail Cargo Hungaria they transported 88.4 million tons. Ton kilometres dropped from 29 billion tons to 23 billion tons. This reduced the total result of Rail Cargo Austria AG by 9 per cent to EUR 2.32 billion. The operating result was clearly negative with minus EUR 101.8 million.

However, the block train concept from Central and Western Europe and back is still well received. Together with their partners the subsidiary Express-Interfracht has handled more than 2,400 trains on the routes from and to Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey in 2009. The Rolling Road of Ökombi shifted 313,500 trucks from the road to the railway. About 225,000 units thereof (up 12.5 per cent) were on the account of the Brenner route.

A key area of the Rail Cargo Austria group is the specialisation and modernisation of their wagon fleet. In 2009 they started deploying 200 WoodRailer special wagons, which are suitable for container as well as wood transportations, and 500 wagons for container, wood and steel transport.

Rail Cargo Austria Group consists of Express-Interfracht Internationale Spedition GmbH, Rail Cargo Hungaria Zrt., ÖBB Produktion GmbH (51%) and ÖBB Technische Services GmbH (51%). The number of staff employed per 31 December 2009 was 11,006 persons; 3,639 of them employed at Rail Cargo Hungaria.
