RCA/Innofreight: WoodTainer jubilee at Sappi Gratkorn

Sappi Gratkorn receives its millionth “WoodTainer“ special container with wood chips

On 12 March the Gratkorn location of the Sappi Group has celebrated a commemorable jubilee in the presence of Doris Bures (Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology in Austria), Franz Voves (Governor of Styria) and Friedrich Macher (Spokesman of the RCA Management Board). The paper factory has received the millionth special container filled with wood chips. Since 2004 the boxes with the brand name “WoodTainer“ of the Styrian Innofreight Group have been delivered on the rail under the control of Rail Cargo Austria.

Eight years ago the Innofreight Group has started developing the special container “WoodTainer“. They have currently 2,500 boxes available in their fleet. They are used by the cargo railways Rail Cargo Austria, DB Schenker Rail or SBB Cargo. RCA alone is currently using 1,200 units for combined transport. The special containers were developed for special needs of transportations for the paper, cellulose, wood and energy industry. Last year around 4 million tons of bulk cargo were transported in "WoodTainers“ throughout Europe, which saved around 200,000 truck trips.

Sappi operates Austria’s largest paper mill in Gratkorn. With the support of Rail Cargo Austria the company handles more than 2 million tons of incoming and outgoing freight on the rail per year. The major volume of it is handled in block trains. In 2009 around 42,000 wagons were amnipulated at the site of the paper factory.
