RCG and TransContainer join forces on the Silk Road

During the “Strategic Partnership 1520” conference, which is held in Vienna for the first time, at the Kempinski Palace, ÖBB’s CEO Andreas Matthä and Oleg Belozerov, CEO and Chairman of the Executive Board of Russian Railways, signed a cooperation agreement for cargo and passenger transport. The main goal is the extension of the broad gauge railway to the Vienna area.

In detail, a 400 km new rail line from Košice to Vienna shall be implemented; a feasibility study has been conducted and showed positive results. Subject to the pending permits, the construction should be started in a few years, the construction phase shall be completed by 2033. The amount of the investment is still open; a possible location for the rail terminal is region of Parndorf, Burgenland, Norbert Hofer, Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology, said to the press at the signing ceremony.

Also during the broad gauge conference Strategic Partnership 1520, RCG and the Russian logistics specialist TransContainer signed a Memorandum of Understanding, taking a significant step towards intensifying freight traffic on the Silk Road route. One of the goals of their cooperation is the implementation of regular intermodal transport services between China and Europe. By 2020, the frequency shall be increased from today’s two weekly rotations to ten weekly rotations.

“This step brings together two experts in the rail logistics sector and thus offers our Chinese customers a genuine and, above all, high quality alternative to other routes and production modes,” says Thomas Kargl, Board Member Rail Cargo Group.
