Revised Mediterranean program with Hamburg Süd

Hamburg Süd modifies Mediterranean-Caribbean service and expands Intra-Caribbean program

As a response to the changed market conditions the Hamburg Süd shipping company reorganises its Mediterranean-Caribbean service. The regular service, which had so far been operated on their own, will be replaced by a slot charter agreement in the frame of the MGX service of Hapag-Lloyd. “This leads to an improvement of the previous frequency, while the harbours coverage can be maintained in the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and at the Atlantic/Gulf coast of the U.S.“, the company announces in a press release.

The joint MGX Mediterranean Mexican Gulf Express is operated with six container vessels (with a capacity of 3,200 TEU each, nominal). The port rotation is the following: Cagliari, Livorno, Genua, Barcelona, Valencia, Port Everglades, Veracruz, Altamira, Houston, New Orleans, Cagliari. Under the reserve of the approval by the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) the first departure is scheduled to start on 2 March 2010 with “Barcelona Express” from Livorno.

In the context of this changed service, a service optimisation is to take place in the Intra-Caribbean network of Hamburg Süd. As of 18 February 2010 the Intra Karibik Feeder Service (ITFS) was expanded to two vessels, which call on a weekly fixed-day basis at the ports of Cartagena, Puerto Limon, Santo Tomas de Castilla, Kingston, Rio Haina and Cartagena. At the same time Hamburg Süd launches a new service that connects the hub port Cartagena with Barranquilla (Colombia) and San Juan (Puerto Rico). This service will be available from the beginning of March.
