Rostock Port felt recession in ferry traffic in 2009

Substantial decline in cargo throughput at Rostock Port in 2009

Rostock Port registered considerable losses in cargo throughput in 2009. With 21.5 million tons (gross) the reference value of the previous year was missed by around one fifth. “The year 2009 had a bad start and it wasn’t possible to improve the level despite many efforts of the customers“, Ulrich Bauermeister, Managing Director Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock mbH, says regretfully.

Major losses were registered in the fields of rolling load, ferry and roro traffic. The total volume of 16 million tons in 2008 fell to 11.8 million tons (down 26 per cent). Whereas in 2008 it was 13.7 million tons of ferry goods and 2.3 million tons of roro goods that rolled over the quay sides, last year only 10.2 million tons (down 25 per cent) and 1.5 million tons (down 34 per cent) were handled.

The number of trucks transported by ferry and roro services from and to northern Europe sunk from 419,748 in 2008 to 302,905 units. The number of trailers declined from 109,744 to 85,434. There were also losses in moved rail wagons from and to Trelleborg. The figure dropped from 17,178 wagons in 2008 to 7,686 last year. Liquid goods throughput sunk 14 per cent to 4 million tons. Bulk goods showed an annual result of 5.4 million tons, which is a down of 9 per cent on the 2008 figure. General cargo showed a decline in throughput figures by 35 per cent to 411,000 tons.

The terminal for combined load transport registered 63,442 units with a tonnage of 1.3 million in the reporting period. Thus 8 per cent less units were handled compared to the previous year. Every week 25 combined transport trains are operated from Rostock Port to Verona (12), Duisburg/Hamburg (6), Basel (5) and Wels (2).
