Slight declines in volume at DB Schenker Logistics

EBIT fell by 22.9 per cent year-on-year: Deutsche Bahn still struggling with gloomy economic conditions and rising costs for personnel and energy

In the period from January to June 2013 the globally operating transport and logistics provider DB Schenker Logistics registered slightly declining volumes in forwarding business. The number of shipments carried by the DB Schenker Logistics business unit in the European land transport sector fell slightly by 1 per cent to 47.3 million. The volume of air freight shipments declined by 2 per cent to 526,000 tonnes; ocean freight shipments fell 1.6 per cent to 911,000 TEU. Revenues in the contract logistics segment in turn rose by 6.9 per cent to EUR 887 million, reads the Deutsche Bahn’s hot-off-the-press half-year report.

Also rail freight transport reported lower figures for the first half of the year as the volume of goods carried fell from the same year-ago period by 2.8 per cent, to 196.7 million tonnes. Volumes sold dropped by 4.4 per cent to 51.6 billion tonne kilometres (tkm).

While revenues posted for the first six months remained almost stable at EUR 19.37 billion (0.6 per cent less), earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) fell by 22.9 per cent to EUR 1.02 billion. DB was primarily affected by gloomier economic conditions around the world. Furthermore, higher costs for personnel and energy, the hard winter, the flood in Germany, as well as the ongoing shortage of vehicles were additional negative factors for DB.

Net capital expenses were increased during the first half of the year by EUR 190 million to EUR 1.6 billion. Net financial debt increased by 3.8 per cent to just under EUR 17 billion. “The second half of the year will still be marked by great uncertainties arising from the economy and the aftermath of the floods”, states the company management.
