Slight increase in cargo throughput in Port of Rotterdam

11.9 million TEU and almost 18 million tons of RoRo cargo passed the Dutch seaport of Rotterdam in 2011

In spite of the unfavourable economic situation and the stagnation since November the Dutch seaport of Rotterdam was able to achieve growth in cargo throughput in 2011 for the ninth time in the past ten years. Cargo throughput increased by 0.8 per cent or three million tons to 433 million tons in 2011 compared to the previous year, as Hans Smits, Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO, announced on 29 December.

Incoming cargo grew by 0.8 per cent to 308 million tons and outgoing cargo by 0.7 per cent to 126 million tons. There was a decrease in throughput of iron ore and scrap (- 6 per cent), crude oil (- 8 per cent) and mineral oil products (- 6 per cent). More agribulk (+18 per cent), coal (+12 per cent), other dry bulk (+7 per cent), other liquid bulk (+2 per cent), containers (+10 per cent), roll-on/roll-off (+4 per cent) and other general cargo (+13 per cent) were handled.

Growth in units from 20 foot was more than 6 per cent to 11.9 million TEU. The roll-on/roll-off volume amounted to a tight 18 million tons. Financial margins in this segment remain paper-thin, not least because of tough competition. “Other general cargo” (steel, metals, project cargo, paper and wood products, cars and fruit) amounted to 8 million tons.
