Start of the Ferry line between Sassnitz/Mukran and Ust Luga

New ferry line from Sassnitz/Mukran to Ust Luga to ship rail cars, trucks and trailers

As of now there is a regular cargo service available between the ferry port Sassnitz in Rügen and the new Russian deep sea terminal Ust Luga near Sankt Petersburg. The trip from port to port takes 38 hours and covers a distance of 660 sea miles (1222 km). It is operated with a double-deck rail ferry called ‘Petersburg’. Its owner is Black Sea Ferry & Investments, a 51-per cent subsidiary of the Russian state railways (RZD). The ship can transport rail cars, trucks and trailers.

Germany’s Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel and Wladimir Jakunin, President of the Russian Railways (RZD), Rüdiger Grube, CEO Deutschen Bahn, and Volker Schlotmann, Minister of Energy, Infrastructure and national development Mecklenburg-Vorpommern gave the starting signal for the new ferry line. Mrs. Merkel said in her speech: “Efficient transport ways and modern logistics are import motors of the economic development.

I am glad about the new regular ferry line between Germany and Russia. This brings the two countries closer together.“ The ferry port Sassnitz is Germany’s biggest railway ferry port. In the port and railway area a total of 30 kilometres broad gauge tracks (1520 mm) and 60 kilometres normal gauge (1435 mm) are available. Thus Sassnitz-Mukran is Germany’s only port area where broad gauge rail cars can be handled. There are regular ferry services available to Trelleborg (Sweden), Rønne (Denmark), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Ventspils (Latvia), Ust Luga and Sankt Petersburg (Russia).
