Steiermarkbahn takes over second Siemens multisystem locomotive

Another vehicle investment demonstrates continuous growth of national and international transport tasks of Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH

On January 22nd, a multisystem electronic locomotive of the 189 series (type ES64F4) was officially delivered to Steiermarkbahn, the Styrian railway company, at the Siemens plant in Graz. This locomotive is the interim substitute for the ordered multisystem locomotive of the 1216 series (Eurosprinter or Taurus). Thus the Styrian railway company has with immediate effect a second powerful multisystem locomotive in the fleet. Due to its licences the delivered multisystem locomotive with the number 189,822 will mainly be used on the rail routes between Austria – Germany and the Netherlands.

Thanks to their good experiences with the first multisystem locomotive of the 1216 series (Eurosprinter or Taurus), delivered in June 2012, Steiermarkbahn has made use of their option right and demanded another multisystem locomotive of the same type with Siemens, which will have the locomotive number 1216,961. The agreement on the multisystem locomotive of the 1216 series (Eurosprinter or Taurus, ES64U4) was concluded by the end of September 2013 between the Austrian railway enterprise Steiermarkbahn Transport und Logistik GmbH and Siemens AG Österreich (IC RL). The chassis for the locomotive comes from the Siemens plant in Graz.

Steiermarkbahn (a 100 % subsidiary of Steiermärkische Landesbahnen) has been operating in the rail transport market since 2002. The company is mainly dealing with the provision of transport services for cargo traffic. The focus of their activities lies on implementing block train transports, carrying various different goods. The Steiermarkbahn implements the transportations in cooperation with Austrian and international partners. Due to continuously growing transport tasks the company has decided to make another investment for a vehicle.
