Stena Line takes over five ferry routes from Scandlines

Scandlines shipping company sells majority of Baltic Sea business to Swedish shipping group Stena Line

The Scandlines shipping company reduces its commitment in the Baltic Sea. As of now the five ferry routes Travemünde-Ventspils, Travemünde-Liepaja, Nynäshamn-Ventspils, Rostock-Trelleborg and Sassnitz-Trelleborg are drected by the Swedish shipping company Stena Line. Scandlines with its key business in the triangle between Germany, Denmark and Sweden will in the future focus on its main traffic routes Rostock – Gedser, Puttgarden – Rødby and Helsingborg – Helsingør. The deal is conditioned on approval from the relevant competition authorities.

Whereas Stena Line previously has been present on the routes between Sweden and Germany through cooperation with Scandlines, the Baltic routes represent a new market for the company. “Focusing on our three traffic machines together with our land-based retail operations will help us strengthen our image as a provider of efficient and reliable services in the triangle between Germany, Denmark and Sweden”, explains Søren Poulsgaard Jensen, CEO Scandlines. In total, the transaction concerns about 300 employees in Germany, Sweden and the Baltic States. The staff that are employed with Scandlines in Germany and Latvia and who work on the specified routes will be offered new positions with Stena Lines.

Stena Line Group acts as an international transport and travel service company within a comprehensive European route network. Their offer covers 19 ferry routes in Scandinavia and around the United Kingdom as well as connections between eight countries. With a fleet of 35 vessels and 5,700 employees they achieved a revenue of SEK 9.08 billion (EUR 1.01 billion) lately.
