Hamburg Süd Group was back on track again in 2010

Also the Hamburg Süd group, a division of the Oetker Group, benefited rom the recovery of the global economy in the year 2010. Following the historic crisis year of 2009 the company benefited from a resurgent world economy along with her Brazilian sister company Aliança.

In the segment of container liner services the shipping group boosted its shipment volume in 2010 by 23 per cent to roughly 2.9 million TEU, as Richard Oetker, personally liable partner of Holding Dr. August Oetker KG, announced at the balance press conference in Bielefeld. As, in addition to volume, freight rates recorded a moderate recovery, turnover in liner shipping added a good 45 per cent to just under EUR 3.9 billion. Including conventional break-bulk and product tanker operations, the shipping group’s total turnover increased to some EUR 4.43 billion, 38.9 per cent up on 2009.

The fleet operated by the Hamburg Süd Group comprised a total of 169 vessels on average throughout the year 2010, 40 ships of them group-owned, with 113 employed in the liner services and 56 in the tramp division. Slot capacity of the container ships deployed in the liner services rose by 22 per cent, to around 371,000 TEU, in comparison with the previous year. This year the shipping company has been recording a quite moderate business development so far.
