EU-raid against four European container shipping lines

Shipping lines Maersk Line, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd suspected of of illegal pricing agreements

The container shipping lines Maersk Line, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd and Hamburg Süd are suspects of unlawful pricing agreements. Officials of the EU commission carried out unannounced house searches at the headquarters of the named enterprises on Tuesday. The concerned companies rejected the accusations in statements and promised to support the investigations. They were acting according to the EU’s competition rules, they said unanimously.

In a press release the competition authority of the European commission suspects the container shipping lines of having reached agreements on prices and volumes in traffic ex Europe. There was reason to assume “the companies violated European competition law, which inhibits pricing agreements and misuse of a dominant market position“, a release of the European Union reads. If these accusations are right, the EU comission is authorised to impose penalties of up to ten per cent of the annual turnover of the enterprises.
