STI Freight Management expanding to cruise logistics

From summer 2014 STI will supply eight vessels of AIDA Cruises and plans to continuously expand its services in this market segment

STI Freight Management is expanding its food logistics for AIDA cruise ships. The service provider specialising in temperature-controlled transportations will supply the AIDAsol among others with deep-freeze goods, fresh goods and dry cargo including German beer, French cheese and Japanese fish with the launch of this summer schedule. Built in 2011 the 253 metres cruise ship provides space for about 2,200 passengers and 609 crew members.

The guaranteed supply of ships with deep-freeze and fresh products requires a sophisticated logistics chain. From the warehouses in international maritime bonded port in Hamburg 20 multi-temperatured STI-trucks per week will drive to the ports of AIDAsol, among others to Amsterdam, Barcelona and Piraeus. The just-in-time delivery of cruise giants with fresh produce is a complex task. The ships have extremely narrow time windows for delivery at the port terminals. In addition, complex customs regulations or unpredictable route changes – for example, due to difficult weather conditions – may arise. Sometimes cargo must be delivered within two days from Hamburg to Barcelona.

STI supplies around 120 cruise ships of all sizes. The company headquartered in Duisburg carries a volume of about 9,500 tonnes per year. The delivery quantity is expected to continue to rise in the future. „We strive for a continuous expansion of our services in this segment. This also includes procurement logistics for cruise ships,“ explains Kai Schüttke, CEO of STI Germany.

Since 1983, STI Freight Management has been specialising in the planning and implementation of complex transport and logistics projects. The subsidiary of the lead logistics provider HAVI Global Logistics employs 221 persons at 13 locations. In addition to international transports of food and other temperature-sensitive goods, such as high quality pharmaceuticals, the competencies of the company includes warehousing and customs clearance too. Approximately 244,000 domestic and international overland transportations, 9,800 air and sea freight shipments as well as 26,300 customs clearance processes are carried out per year.
