STLB open maintenance hangar for containers at Terminal Graz Süd

EUR 900,000 total investment: Steiermärkische Landesbahnen start operating new maintenance hangar for containers and infrastructure at Cargo Center Graz

Steiermärkische Landesbahnen (STLB), a Styrian railway enterprise, inaugurated their new multi-purpose maintenance hangar for containers and infrastructure at Terminal Graz Süd (Cargo Center Graz) on 11 September. “This is an important step in developing our activities at this cargo facility“, Dr. Helmut Wittmann, managing director, says on this occasion.

The multi-purpose building has a 400 m² area designated for repair, as well as about 200 m² for storage, office, etc. The characteristic section gates of the hangar allow for simple manipulation of containers.

Every year about 2,500 units will be serviced there. In this division five employees carry out the works for all leading container shipping companies like Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM.

As the new multi-purpose hall is situated at the east end of the container storage area, working processes can now be optimised. So far, the box systems had been serviced in the vehicle repair station, requiring additional effort for manipulation.

For more than 11 years Steiermärkische Landesbahnen have been in charge of throughput of containers and swap bodies, using two gantry cranes. In 2013 they handled 130,000 TEU. An increase to 150,000 TEU can be expected for 2014. The additional services of a terminal include depot services and service for containers. Therefore the rail company – in cooperation with the WienCont company – also offers repair and cleaning of transport boxes.

Moreover the Steiermärkische Landesbahnen are in charge of all maintenance and repair works of railway infrastructure at Terminal Graz Süd. Total length of the tracks is more than 17 kilometres. There are have about 50 track switches, mainly operated from an electronic control centre.
