Strong rise in waterborne transhipment in the port of Vienna

Hafen Wien group achieved a record in container business in 2013 and is investing EUR 16 million this year

The port of Vienna continues to boost the expansion of services in the field of trimodal logistics also in 2014. In addition to implementing the second phase of land reclamation, so the port Freudenau gains 35,000 m² of additional space for goods throughput, the sheet pile wall in Albern will soon be extended by 100 meters. In cooperation with a high & heavy transhipment specialist (editor’s note: Felbermayer group) a heavy cargo centre with over 4,000 m² for the transhipment of goods up to 450 tonnes will be built there, announced Peter Hanke, CEO Wien Holding, together with the port of Vienna’s managers Fritz Lehr and Karin Zipperer, at a press conference.

In the 2013 financial year the Hafen Wien group achieved its best result in four years. EUR 53 million in turnover mean an 8 per cent increase on the year 2012. The results from ordinary business rose by 15 per cent to EUR 8.1 million. Waterborne transhipment with 1,500 ships calling (2012: less than 1,200 units) grew 38 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes. In total about 8 million tonnes of cargo were handled in the port, up 25 per cent.

In the container segment, represented by the subsidiary WienCont, a record volume of 500,000 TEU was achieved. Volume at the location in Vienna rose 14 per cent to more than 480,000 TEU. Together with forwarding partners 58,224 units were handled at the car terminal (+ 0.4 per cent on 2012). The vehicles handled via the port of Vienna account for around one fifth of the new vehicles that were registered in Austria. Capacity utilisation in the port’s own warehouses (70,000 m²) and open warehouses has surpassed the benchmark of 80 per cent in 2013.
