Strongly growing sea cargo throughput at Port of Hamburg

Container volume at Port of Hamburg has grown 10.7 per cent between January and September

There is a spirit of optimism at Port of Hamburg. Following a moderate uptrend in the first three months of this year, the German universal port, that was hardly hit by the global financial and economic crisis in 2009, is now sailing again on a course of growth after nine months. With a total throughput of 89.4 million tons they report a plus of 8 per cent for the first three quarters of 2010, compared to last year.

Regardig importations Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V., the marketing department of the port of Hamburg, recorded a throughput result of 51.8 million tons (up 11.8 per cent). Export via Hamburg developed also positively with 37.6 million tons (up 3.3 per cent). General cargo throughput, dominant in Hamburg, showed a throughput result of 60.2 million tons, which is an increase of 8.6 per cent. Break bulk throughput amounted to 29.2 million tons, which means it rose 6.9 per cent. Throughput of non-containerised general cargo improved thanks to growing importations of project load and vehicles by 4.8 per cent to 1.9 million tons.

After a difficult first quarter container throughput at Port of Hamburg has left the crisis behind in the following months and showed a double-digit growth again in the first nine months with 10.7 per cent. At the container terminals at Port of Hamburg a total of 5.9 million TEU was put through in the first three quarters. Declines in handling of empty containers, which resulted first and foremost from the shift of some feeder services in the crisis year 2009, are now past. In the first nine months 912,000 empty containers (TEU) were handled in Hamburg, which is 15 per cent more than in the same period of 2009. The development of the handling of full containers (TEU) in the first three quarters shows a stable uptrend with an increase of 9.9 per cent to 5 million TEU.

One reason for the growth in container throughput were the reopening of some China and Asia services since April, which had been temporarily ceased by the shipping companies during the crisis. Moreover there are many new full container and feeder services, such as the FAL-5 service of the two shipping companies CMA CGM and Maersk Line as well as of the Team Lines shipping company, which concentrates its Baltic Sea services to Hamburg.

The first nine months container throughput of Hamburg with Asia at a total of 3.5 million TEU shows a plus of 13 per cent compared to the previous year. Container traffic from and to America reached a result of 587,000 TEU (up 13.9 per cent), container routes to/from Africa showed a result of 150,000 TEU (up 25.7 per cent) and most important for Hamburg, the European distribution and short sea traffic amounted to 1.6 million TEU or plus 3.7 per cent.
