Supply Chain Excellence Awards 2019: The Voiteq Award for Supply Chain Visibility

Rolls-Royce Aerospace with CEVA Logistics were Highly Commended, no mean feat in an award where the quality of entries was exceptionally high, and seven entries were shortlisted. But Jaguar Land Rover took home the award.

In being Highly Commended CEVA and Rolls-Royce demonstrated its global supply chain visibility tool, Matrix, which allows it to provide end-to-end supply chain visibility at part number level for all Rolls-Royce aerospace civil and defence engine production facilities globally.  The system is capable of providing a seven-year insight into the Rolls-Royce supply chain. Because of the increased visibility and control, Rolls-Royce has seen an increase of on-time performance, and a reduction in the number of expedite shipments and a significant reduction in their inbound logistics spend. The project has seen Rolls Royce make savings totaling £19.6m, to which the judges said that the entry had demonstrated clear evidence of business benefits.

Jaguar Land Rover win the Voiteq Award for Supply Chain Visibility

However, Jaguar Land Rover were the eventual winners. Its trading division reports into the purchasing function of JLR, receiving 26 weeks of scheduled demand on a rolling basis from its global manufacturing plants. It also faced the strategic challenge of doing more for less. It needed a solution to streamline and simplify the processes, as well as a tool to plan manpower. The trading division worked with partner Syncreon and developed a quantifiable sequence of process timing that could be placed against each scheduled part so manpower demands could be placed against delivery. It also mapped peaks and troughs in demand and transferred ‘trough hours’ into learning and development hours for staff.

JLR has been able to re-establish its baseline costs, achieve more accurate budget forecasting and establish the cost of performance. In addition the manpower planning tool I now central to its supply chain re-design process – and is playing a central roll is right-sixing its international business as well as Brexit scenario planning.

The judges praised the solution for being run in-house and for its huge impact on the supply chain, with visibility allowing for proactive planning. They said that its “unrelenting focus” on OTIF (on-time, in-full) while taking out cost made for the right outcome. They also noted “lots of energy and drive, and a tangible sense of pride” from JLR.

Tim Brislin, ESC operations manager, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “This was a big effort to make a small step. It is the first of two phases of a project, and to be recognised for the first is both significant and poignant, because we gained this award at a time which was most relevant to Jaguar Land Rover.”
