Third container crane at WienCont terminal 1

Future scenario WienCont terminal Vienna-Freudenau: Up to twelve block train tracks

The third container crane, which was set up in late 2012, is scheduled to start operating by the end of March 2013. The container terminal in the Viennese Freudenau port will then have three modern bridge cranes and will be able to make even greater use of the special access to the port allowing also electro-locomotives to enter the port without shunting operations necessary ( Schwungeinfahrt  – entering the port using the momentum). In addition to the targets of the various expansion measures Robert Groiß, managing director WienCont, presented also a future scenario for the terminal in the Viennese port Freudenau in the frame of a conference on combined transport in Vienna. According to this scenario it was possible to double the number of tracks at block train length to a total of 12, allowing port access without shunting. Moreover the scenario concentrates on a second crane bridge for water-to-land throughput and further silting up of port area. So far a total of 40,000m  was silted up, resulting in a total area of 120,000m  of the WienCont container terminal. Each 50 per cent of the new area is being used for terminal activities and automotive logistics, respectively.

WienCont is the operator of the container terminal in the Port of Vienna, a company of the Wien Holding. The company operates also empty container depots, container trade and repair at the locations in Graz, Wels and Villach. Moreover WienCont offers customs and trucking services at its location in the Port of Vienna.
