Weak first quarter 2013 for Bremen’s ports

bremenports: Weak international economy impacted cargo transhipment figures in the first quarter of the year 2013

Following late increases that were above average, the bremenports started the year with losses in the sea cargo segment. Total throughput in the first three months of 2013 declined from 21.7 to 18.9 million tonnes. Compared with the same period last year, this means a loss of 13 per cent. The container logistics segment, mainly concentrated at the location in Bremerhaven, saw 1.41 million TEU between January and March 2013, which is 12.2 per cent less than in the same period of the previous year.

The number of vehicles handled on the Weser dropped from 528,883 to 491,113 units, a decline of 7.1 per cent. As to bulk cargo, mainly handled in Bremen-City, volume declined 7.2 per cent to 2.1 million tonnes in the first three months of 2013. Terminals in Bremerhaven accounted for 16.1 million tonnes of the results (down 13.8 %), port facilities in Bremen-City accounted for 2.8 million tonnes (down 7.8 %).

“Our twin ports have withstood the negative impacts of the weak economic development in many parts of the world longer than their competitors. But these consequences are now becoming visible at Bremen’s quays as well“, says Senator Martin Günthner. The port had lost cargo volume, but transhipment level in general remained high. The politician is convinced “the port group Bremen/Bremerhaven will return to the path of growth as soon as the global economy recovers".
