2 million standard containers under the direction of Metrans

Rail transport systems of Metrans link Port of Hamburg with the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary

The container operator Metrans had a reason to celebrate at the beginning of this week. The subsidiary of the HHLA group (Hamburg) has handled the two millionth standard container (TEU) on the rail route between Prague and Hamburg. During a visit of Hamburg’s First Mayor Christoph Ahlhaus in Prague a rail crane put the “jubilee box” onto a Metrans wagon.

Metrans links the Czech Republic, Slovakia and several other countries of this region with highly efficent rail transport services and container hubs in Prague, Zlin, Dunajská Streda and Kosice with the German seaports. Between Prague and Hamburg alone more than 60 trains are operated per week. Meanwhile 75 per cent of the cargo transport between Germany and the Czech Republic run on rail.

The first Metrans container train between Prague and Hamburg was handled on 18 February 1992. Established in 1991 the enterprise is held by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (51 per cent), DB Schenker Rail (35 per cent) and its Management (13.5 per cent of the shares).
