ASFINAG expands guide system for rest areas for truck drivers

Information system of Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG shows free rest areas in Greater Linz and Vienna

A new information system of the Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG shall guide truck drivers to free rest areas. This shall reduce traffic of drivers looking for rest areas in Greater Linz and Vienna, but also help keeping the obligatory rest periods. The project had been launched in October 2012 in Greater Vienna. Since then six rests and eight rest areas in the surrounding of the Austrian capital with a total of more than 700 truck parking spaces are covered by the information system. From March also in Greater Linz data about free truck parking spaces will be available on sign boards to truck drivers and transport companies.

What will be visible are only some signboards. The bilingual boards show if there are spaces available or not. In Upper Austria these boards will be installed at the motorways A 1 Westautobahn and A 8 Innkreis-Autobahn. The system will cover the following rest areas: Ansfelden Nord and Süd, Wels, Voralpenkreuz as well as Allhaming Nord and Süd. The total capacity is 282 truck parking spaces. The sign-boards in Greater Linz are controlled via a centre in Wels. In addition, the video cams can be viewed on the website of ASFINAG.

About 5,800 parking spaces for trucks are currently available at all motorways and fast lanes in Austria. In the frame of the rest area concept of ASFINAG another 40 spaces will be added to the existing 36.
