bayernhafen Group defies economic crisis

Bavarian ports report increased container volumes for past business year

The bayernhafen Group has well sustained its position in the business year 2009. Despite the economic crisis the enterprise was able to increase its container throughput to 196,600 standard units (TEU). This is a plus of 8.4 per cent on the year 2008. However the port (210 employees) has nevertheless felt the consequences of the weak economy in the iron and steel industry, as well as the building materials sector. In 2009 the total throughput declined 9 per cent to 25.544 million tons. The prognosticated turnover for 2009 is EUR 30 million.

In Aschaffenburg the total throughput showed a decline of 4.3 per cent. In Bamberg a total volume of around 2.5 million tons was put through; 3.2 per cent up compared on 2008. The new combined transport terminal in Bamberg registered a throughput volume of almost 12,000 TEU. In Regensburg total throughput dropped 13.2 per cent to 6.69 million tons. Despite a decline of 10.9 per cent to 12.57 million tons in total throughput, bayernhafen Nürnberg was able to maintain its position as the biggest logistics centre in southern Germany. A considerable increase of 11.8 per cent to 652,700 tons was reported by bayernhafen Passau.
