Bremerhaven: Increasing volume on the port’s railway

More cargo on the railway: In 2013 up to 670 trains per week frequented the port’s railway in Bremerhaven

Rail logistics is in the bremen ports remains high in demand. „On the tracks of the port railway in the overseas port of Bremerhaven there was even more business in 2013 than in the year before,“ stated Martin Günthner port senator on April 23.

According to him the number of ingoing and outgoing trains in the port increased to about 29,500. This means an average of 567 trains per week. In 2012, the statisticians counted 558 trains per week on average, in 2011 the figure was 493.

Also the curve of weekly peak values was up. In 2013 there were at about 670 trains per week (2012: 630 trains). While in 2012 the container and car port reached top results of more than 620 trains in four calendar weeks only, a year later this had been the case in 16 calendar weeks.

„The recent development of railway freight transport in Bremerhaven is not only a benefit for the port,“ says Martin Guenthner, „but also to the environment. The huge quantity of containers and new cars that reach or leave Bremerhaven on the rail are transported in a particularly environmentally friendly way,“ he adds.

Different developments could be observed in rail cargo volumes transported in 2013. While container traffic recorded a decline of 4 per cent, the car traffic showed a strong increase of about 9 per cent.
