Cargolux Airlines celebrates its comeback to the profit zone

Cargolux Airlines achieved substantial improvement in its 2010 results and returns to profit after three years of losses

The 2010 balance sheet of Cargolux Airlines International S.A. (Luxemburg) shows good figures. After two difficult years – also due to antitrust cases – the airline specialising in air cargo traffic achieved profit again.

Turnover rose 23.9 per cent to USD 1.748 billion. Balance sheet profit turned from losses of USD 153.3 million in the previous year to plus USD 59.8 million. They transported 683,380 tons, or 8.9 per cent more cargo. This resulted in a 10.1 per cent increase in operation performance to around 5.3 billion freight ton kilometres. The average load factor of the Cargolux freight aircrafts improved by 4.3 percentage points to 73.3 per cent. In line with that, the daily average aircraft utilization strengthened by 8.2 per cent. The main business growth driver was Asia. But also on the routes to North and South America Cargolux registered visible increases.

However, Cargolux had to struggle with the development of fuel prices. The company operates currently one Boeing 747-200SF and 15 Boeing 747-400Fs. In the second half of the year 2011 they plan to take over their first 747-8 cargo aircraft.
