CombiNet sees many restrictions in UCT due to NINA

Reorganisation of national unaccompanied combined transport with RCA/ICA causes annoyance of 40 members of the CombiNet association

The reorganisation of the national unaccompanied combined transport in Austria by introducing NINA (National Intermodal Network Austria) is disconcerting the customers of Rail Cargo Austria and Intercontainer Austria. The CombiNet association – a coperative of about 40 combined transport operators – warns in its written statement against a considerable re-shift of transport from rail to road. “The consequences would immediately affect the roads in Austria and its neighbouring countries; the environmental impact will become visible within a certain time lag“, they say in the press release.

The use of the former overnight network with the offering consisting of NINA and a „basic network“ (see our report in OEVZ N° 12/2011, page 8) causes sometimes substantial restrictions for operators of unaccompanied combined transport, according to CombiNet. “Instead of previously 1,050 weekly overnight connections no more than 210 links will be available in Austria in the future. From these 210 new direct services, 50 are closing too early, or provide too late delivery times to maintain the advantage of overnight traffic. A shift of consignments to trucks can thus be expected immediately“, the association says alarmingly.
