Considerable decline of cargo transport on the Danube in 2009

Agricultural/forestry products and living animals are the sole exception to register growth in volumes

In 2009 the cargo transport on the Austrian section of the Danube registered considerable declines. According to Statistik Austria the total volume amounted to 9.32 million tons, which is 16.8 per cent or 1.88 million tons below last year’s level. In parallel the number of loaded trips decreased by 17.6 per cent to 9,669 operations. Transport performance (product of transport volume and covered distance) within the nation amounted to 2 billion ton kilometres (down 15.1 per cent).

The slump in volumes affected all transport areas (cross border reception: minus 13.7 per cent; cross border dispatch: minus 27 per cent; transit: minus 12.2 per cent; national transport: minus 34.4 per cent). With the exception of agricultural and forestry products and living animals (29 per cent up to 1,584,005 tons) all groups of goods registered declines, including metal products (down 49.1 per cent to 759,515 tons), mineral raw materials or products and building materials (down 46.1 per cent to 321,114 tons), ores and metal scrap (down 15.8 per cent to 2.75 million tons) and oil products (down 14.6 per cent to 1.91 million tons).
