Considerably more cargo transport with Zillertalbahn in 2011

Cargo traffic of Zillertalbahn (ZVB AG) urges to be treated equally with ÖBB in the form of state promotion

Cargo traffic operations of the railway enterprise Zillertalbahn (ZVB AG) were marked by measures to optimise costs and overcoming the economic crisis in the 2011 financial year. Their major customer’s increasing demand for timber (Binderholz) effected an increase in transport volume on 2010 by 54.4 per cent to 267,843 tonnes. This saved about 23,000 truck trips for the Zillertal in Tyrol.

In the current year the management aims at equal treatment of cargo traffic of ZVB AG andthe activities of ÖBB. They are striving to receive payments of the federal state to shift transport from road to rail. A major part of these promotions could be passed also to their customer Binderholz and would therefore make rail transport more attractive regarding prices, the company states.

Zillertalbahn was established in 1899 as a pure railway enterprise and has been operating public bus transport since 1935. ZVB AG headquartered in Jenbach has currently 170 employees. The main shareholders and thus majority owners are the municipalities of Zillertal and Jenbach. In the 2011 financial year the enterprise generated from about EUR 15 million turnover and a positive result from usual business activity at EUR 400,918.
