Considerably more sea cargo at Port of Antwerp in 2010

Belgian seaport of Antwerp registered strong increases in container throughput in the calendar year 2010

 

The Belgian Port of Antwerp witnessed a clear reversal of the trend of sea cargo throughput in 2010. According to preliminary figures of the port authority the total volume amounted to 178 million tons. This means last year’s figures were beat by 13 per cent.

The growth driver was container traffic, which rose by 17.8 per cent to 102.77 million tons and reached a new record level. In total 8.48 million TEU were handled at the container terminals, which is a 16.1 per cent increase on 2009. The conventional/breakbulk segment in Antwerp has increased by 6.3 per cent to 11.1 million tons in the reporting period. Ro/ro transport volume also increased, namely by 14.8 per cent to 3.6 million tons. The volume of bulk freight was up 7 per cent on the previous year. The number of seagoing ships calling at Antwerp has risen to 14,750 calls, an increase of 6 per cent.
