Continuous uptrend with Mierka Donauhafen Krems

Cooperation with the Romanian seaport Constanza opens Mierka Donauhafen Krems new opportunities in traffic with Turkey:

Mierka Donauhafen Krems feels a further economic uptrend. In the first half of the year 2011 a total of 540,000 tons of goods were loaded and unloaded at Lower Austria’s biggest place for throughput on the waterway. This means an increase of eight per cent compared to the same period last year. “We are a service supplier. We are just as fine as our customers are", Managing Director Hubert Mierka comments on the positive result when talking to the Lower Austrian press service NÖ Wirtschaftspressedienst.

Split by transport modes, 167,000 tons were transported by vessels, 155,000 tons on the railway and 218,000 tons were transported by trucks in the first half of the year. As for throughput with vessels the Danube port in Krems registered a four per cent-increase, railway and truck traffic grew eight per cent each. This year 207 freight vessels called the port of Krems until the end of June, which is two per cent more than in the first six months of 2010. In the first six months of this year, it were mainly agricultural products, raw material for the steel and chemicals industry as well as machines for the power industry that were transported and transhipped on the Danube.

Hubert Mierka sees god opportunities for more business in the cooperation with the Romanian Black Sea port Constanza, which – after the economic crisis has come to an end – proves to be a “door-opener” to the booming market in Turkey. “It was only recently that were handled a major order. In this case the raw material for the glass industry had its origin in Turkey, and was transported from Constanza to Krems on the Danube “, the entrepreneur gives a concrete example.
