Danube specialist Prof. Dr. Franz Pisecky has deceased

Austria’s river shipping industry looses one of its most prominent representatives – Prof. Dr. Franz Pisecky
 
The members of the Austrian river shipping industry mourn the loss of one of the most profound experts in this area. Prof. Dr. Franz Pisecky has deceased on 26 January 2013 at the age of 90 years. The Danube expert was well renowned among his colleagues for his knowledge about the waterway, and was acknowledged with many awards, among them: Gold Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria, Gold Decoration of Upper Austria, Science Medal of the City of Linz, Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Gold Medal for Services to the German Chamber of Commerce in Austria.
 
Born 1923 in Linz, he graduated with a dregree of journalism, German language studies, the Absolvent des Studiums der Zeitungswissenschaft, Germanistik, history and political science at the Universities of Vienna and Graz, and after obtaining his teacher’s degree and a doctorate in 1950 he started working for the Chamber of Commerce in Upper Austria, where he assumed the management of the transport and tourism policy division in 1964. Moreover Piscecky acted as a consultant of the regional government of Upper Austria.
 
His interest for the Danube and his activities for the Austrian Danube region have led Franz Pisecky to take over the function of the managing director of the Austrian river shipping association ‘Kanal- und Schiffahrtsverein’ in 1968 (the later ‘Österreichischer Wasserstraßen- und Schiffahrtsverein’; today ‘ProDanube Austria’). Before that he had been an expert consultant for the association’s committee for many years. In 1990 he was elected vice president of the Österreichischer Wasserstraßen- und Schiffahrtsverein. From 1998 the Danube expert had been a honorary member of the association.
