DB Schenker Vienna gives a “green signal“

The DB Schenker Vienna forwarding company starts using its first natural gas truck for distribution traffic within the capital

The Viennese branch of Schenker & Co AG has put into operation its first natural gas-driven truck. The vehicle of the Iveco brand is being used for distribution traffic in the Vienna city centre. Two more units are to follow in the course of this year.  The project was presented in the form of a joint press conference with the power supplier Wien-Energie.

DB Schenker thereby is giving a clear signal towards environmental friendly transport. Head of the location Alexander Schaffer and Mag. Christian Wojta, regional head of Wien-Energie, explain the advantage of natural gas as fuel by one phrase: CO2-reduction by 20 per cent. This truck has the lowest CO2-emission of its class and is below the regulations of Euro-6. Noise emission amounts to just 50 per cent compared to a diesel-driven truck of about the same size. Natural gas as a fuel emits practically no particulate matter.

The “CNG“ – Compressed Natural Gas is compressed to 200 bar. Fuel costs are considerably lower than for diesel or petrol. As opposed to liquid gas-driven vehicles, CNG-driven trucks may also enter parking garages. Supply is granted by 176 natural gas stations throughout Austria. Vienna’s public transport, Wiener Linien, operates Austria’s biggest fleet of natural-gas driven vehicles. Also Coca-Cola, Porr, Österreichische Post as well as Saubermacher in Vienna operate natural gas-driven vehicles.
