DB Schenker’s logistics centre in Sofia to be finalised

DB Schenker invests EUR 10 million into logistics centre with branch line

New opportunities for national distribution in Bulgaria as well as for the handling of international traffics from/to Southeastern Europe will soon be available to DB Schenker’s customers. The globally acting transport and logistics enterprise is erecting a logistics centre in Bozhuriste, which is to start operating in spring 2010. The location is 20 minutes away from the centre of the capital Sofia, situated at the international road connection to Belgrade.

With an investment of EUR 10 million DB Schenker builds one of the most modern hubs for goods transport in Bulgaria. The terminal is divided into a logistics hall that covers 3,000 sq.m. and offers 4,000 pallet slots as well as a 2,000 sq.m. cross-docking hall equipped with 30 loading gates. Both buildings will be equipped with state-of-the-art security and fire protection technology. Moreover, and 3,500 sq.m.-office complex of is being built.

Two branch connections of 220 metres length in total are the special feature of the new building. A ramp allows handling three four-axes wagons simultaneously. The other branch allows loading and unloading up to six wagons at the same time. "In our region we count more on rail ports, that means terminals where we can implement intermodal solutions for customers with profit", Elmar Wieland, CEO of Schenker & Co AG, Vienna, in charge of activities in Bulgaria, draws an outline of the company’s strategy.
