Emirates launches air freight innovation ex Munich

Completely paper-free handling of air freight consignments with Emirates SkyCargo for ex Munich traffic

Emirates SkyCargo is successfully using a new technology which confirms their role as innovator. The air freight division of the international airline from Dubai is sending their first freight consignments from Munich without any paper. All documents for forwarders and the customs office, as e.g. the airway bill, are no longer printed any more, but saved and sent electronically. This has become possible by the creation of a joint technical infrastructure of the participating forwarders and the main customs office at the Munich airport.

The first paper-free freight consignments – so-called “eFreight“ – will be sent twice daily from Munich via the international hub Dubai to Singapore. The freight consists of car parts from a Bavarian manufacturer that are transported to Asia on behalf of CEVA Logistics. Oliver Gasch, Emirates SkyCargo Cargo Manager Munich: “eFreight is the freight business-equivalent of the successfully established electronic ticket for passengers. Our target is to handle 80 per cent of our freight consignments electronically, that means paper-less, by the end of 2010. This would considerably simplify the processes for all parties concerned – from the forwarder to the customs office.“

The introduction of eFreight shall accelerate the handling of consignments and make them environmentally friendlier. This technology is already regularly operated at 22 Emirates SkyCargo-departure airports: In addition to Frankfurt also at the international hub Dubai, in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul and Sydney.

Emirates SkyCargo flies to over 100 destinations in 62 countries worldwide. The fleet comprises 138 passenger jets and seven allfreighter jets (three Boeing 747-400F jets, two Boeing 747-400ERF and two Boeing 777-F). In the 2008/2009 business year Emirates SkyCargo reported a record transport figure of 1.4 million tons of airfreight.
