First call of MSC-mega carrier at Port of Antwerp

Port of Antwerp emphasises relevance of deepening the Scheldt

The Port of Antwerp turns over a new leaf in liner shipment. In the middle of the week the “MSC Beatrice“ – the world’s largest container vessel – made its maiden call at the port. The new unit of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) is an Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS) offering 14,000 TEU of capacity. MSC deploys the carrier in the Silk Service, which connects the ports in the Far and Middle East with Europe.

The first call of “MSC Beatrice” points out the urgent necessity for deepening the Scheldt-river. According to statements of the Antwerp Port Authority 1,505 large container vessels had to wait for high tide last year.
