First call of world’s largest container ship in Hamburg

Containership CMA CGM Marco Polo called the north German seaport of Hamburg for the first time

The Port of Hamburg dedicated December 12 to the first call of the world’s largest container ship. The CMA CGM Marco Polo, with a capacity of 16,020 standard containers, made its first stop at the North German port – at the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai. The container giant is 396 metres long and 53.6 metres wide, and can carry 1,946 boxes more than the previously largest ships of the star class of China Shipping (CSCL), regularly calling the Port of Hamburg.

Like in the CSCL Star series, the deck superstructure of CMA CGM Marco Polo is located at the end of the first third of the ship, and not in the back of the ship. This improves the sight from the bridge, and more containers can be stacked deck. The ship was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering in Goje, South Korea. With CMA CGM the newbuilding operates in the FAL 1 liner service between Europe and East Asia, calling Hamburg every 77 days.
