First Vectron locomotive for ÖBB’s cargo traffic
ÖBB is going to use a locomotive of the Siemens series 1293 for international freight traffic. The framework agreement from 2017 provides for the delivery of up to 200 Vectron electric locomotives.
In a first call, 30 multi-system locomotives were ordered for AC and DC for use on the connections from Austria and Hungary to Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia and Romania and back. The first Vectron machine was officially delivered on 5 March at the Vienna Praterstern station.
“With the additional locomotives we are well prepared for the further international expansion of the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group. The new Vectrons will enable increased self-action in Europe – from the Czech Republic to Italy or from Germany to Slovenia,” Andreas Matthä, CEO of ÖBB-Holding, said on this occasion.
The continued internationalisation is an integral part of the strategy of the Rail Cargo Group. ÖBB freight transport is already one of the leading providers in Europe and is established with branches in 18 countries.
The clear aim is to extend the scope of action beyond that. The target network extends from the North-South axis from Germany via the Balkans to Turkey and to the Trans-Caspian route or Russia and China. The acquisition of the new Vectron locomotives is an important step to strengthen international rail freight traffic.

We have equipped the locomotives exactly according to the wishes of the ÖBB, but it can easily be adapted to any new requirements by adaptations, which gives our customers high investment security.”
The framework agreement includes three different types of locomotives. In addition to multi-system locomotives for the European AC and DC network, AC locomotives with Last Mile propulsion and without Last Mile propulsion can also be called up. This allows the ÖBB to order as needed.
