Freightliner acquires European railway company from Maersk Line

Takeover of ERS Railways B.V. strengthens Freightliner Group’s rail business in global markets
 
Freightliner Group announced the acquisition of ERS Railways B.V., a leading European intermodal rail operator and railway company, from Maersk Line. The transaction is subject to necessary approvals and compliance with applicable laws. The companies agreed not to disclose financial details of the transaction. The acquisition of ERS Railways shall support Freightliner’s strategy of developing businesses in rail markets globally in partnership with local management.
 
Frank Schuhholz, Managing Director of ERS Railways who will continue to lead the business following the acquisition, said “We are welcoming Freightliner Group as our new shareholder who allows us not only to foster our strong relationship with Maersk Line in the long term but also to expand into new markets.” As for Maersk Line the sale means an opportunity to develop their key European markets, says Soren Toft, Vice President of the shipping line.
 
Rotterdam-headquartered ERS Railways was founded in 1994 as an intermodal rail freight operator. The enterprise provides maritime hinterland services from key European ports including Rotterdam, Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Lübeck and Rostock as well as continental European rail services for intermodal operators and forwarders, serving destinations in Italy, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria and the Czech Republic. The company has a fleet of16 multi-system electric locomotives for international/cross border transports and 550 intermodal wagons.
 
Freightliner Group Ltd is a major provider of intermodal rail freight services and bulk haulage services in the UK and is the parent company to the following companies: Freightliner Limited (Intermodal), Freightliner Heavy Haul (Bulk), Freightliner Maintenance (Loco and Wagon Maintenance), Freightliner Poland (Bulk), Freightliner Germany (Bulk) and Freightliner Australia (Bulk and Intermodal). Freightliner Group Ltd has been privatised in 1996 and has an annual turnover in excess of EUR 420 million. The Group currently employs 2,100 people and operates more than 200 locomotives and 5,000 wagons.
