Further investments in the INWAPO river shipping ports

INWAPO Central European International Conference in Baja was a success; Budapest Freeport launches an investment of nearly 3 billion forints

The INWAPO (Upgrading of Inland Waterways and Sea Ports Project for Central-Europe) international conference was held last week in the framework of the 6th Baja Grain Partnership meeting with over 150 participants from eight countries, jointly with the open day of the GIFT-SEE (Green Intermodal Freight Transport) project.

In the line of delegates from the region’s leading forwarding, transport and logistics companies, Port of Constanta director Ambroziu Duma and the president of Hungarian National Shipping Federation Botond Szalma also addressed the public. Professionals of Budapest Freeport Logistics Co. (BSZL) were actively participating at the event, as BSZL has a key role in the cooperation in the framework of INWAPO, the development project of the inland and marine ports in Central Europe. In cooperation with the ports of Bratislava and Vienna, BSZL has evaluated the opportunities for developing shared services, and is testing the possibilities of naval container freight.

BSZL is heading the project’s task force number 6 responsible for coordination of the partners’ investments. Within this framework, resources obtained through the European Union’s tender will be used at the port of Bratislava on crane refurbishment; at the port of Vienna on ramp development; at several partners on IT development, while the Freeport of Budapest has used it to develop stations to obtain electricity and drinking water for the ships at two points of commercial basin number I.

Utilizing the opportunities deriving from the INWAPO project, Budapest Freeport, the operator of Hungary’s largest trimodal logistics center, continues to investigate development and cooperation opportunities that can help the company achieve a leading role also in the Central European region. An investment of nearly 3 billion forints is being launched on the facilities of Budapest Freeport; this is the value of the European Union investment support contract signed by MAHART FREEPORT. The investment embraces building, upgrading and extending the base infrastructure to pave the way for rail, road and waterborne developments. Once the project is finished, the trimodal logistics center will offer its clients far more favorable services than those currently available.
